NIGHTS AT THE CIRCUS

Tiger and Lion Earrings/ Nights at the Circus

TIGER&LION EARRINGS

Some people do really like traditional shopping, I am not one of them. Unless it is a nice day spoiled with a good coffee. My idea of window shopping is screen shopping … while watching my favourite TV show or recently a lecture on design. I open another window and browse on Etsy. Even just looking at the handmade accessories makes me feel good, appreciating the skills and creativity of the artist. I am transferred to a fantasy world.

The day I found the Tiger and Lion silver, eco earrings made by Them Silver Seas I was looking for something quirky with a personality. Something I have not seen before. The theme is called Nights at the Circus. (I am not sure if animals in the circus are banned in most of the countries, but I would hope that they are. They never looked happy there anyway.)

This is the kind of work I admire the most, the artist Laura Brown does not explain in details what the story is about but leaves it to the viewer interpretation. With the similar effect some good movies have on us or a photograph that is never forgotten … they stay with us forever.

I have no idea where and how the story of The Tiger and The Lion had begun and where is it leading to. What I love the most is now I am the creator of the story too 🙂

Please, visit links provided and dive into the Them Silver Seas world. The world of imagination, inspired by fairy tales, storytelling and storytellers, myths and folklore.

SUMMER WINDOW PROPOSAL FOR DESIGUAL

Desigual summer window proposal – day view

This is only a proposal without any budget limitation. The concept was to design a summer window for a fashion brand that took part in New York Fashion Week 2016.

Desigual is a casual clothing brand based in Barcelona, Spain. Founded by a Swiss man Thomas Meyer in 1984. Desigual in Spanish means uneven/unequal and the concept is applied in the brand design, through the use of asymmetry, patchworks, prints, graffiti art, and splashes of intense colour.

CONCEPT

The project involved design of two window display for the summer season. One for a large window at the front of the store with a dividing panel in the middle and a small window which in real life, would be somewhere off the main foot traffic. Both windows had to follow the same theme. I called the theme Summer in the City. Summer in a very hot climate can be hard to bear, without much greenery and water to cool down the end of the day is a blessing.

INSPIRATION

My large window is based on an idea of a play. A bunch of friends feel comfortable with each other jumping across cascading water. The heat is making them crazy, they feel free and they need to cool down, la vida es loca (life is crazy) as Desigual motto says.

The smaller window is inspired by a city seen as a concrete jungle. A couple of friends are hanging out in the skatepark preserving their energy chilling out.

Perhaps at the back of my mind, I was designing the windows for Barcelona city where the hit can be as high as 40 degrees. Probably in other cooler places the concept would come across more as people having fun rather than an escape from the heat. At least I would hope so 🙂

ONE SWALLOW DOES NOT SUMMER MAKE

Lamp window display

‘EARLY SPRING’ WINDOW CONCEPT FEATURING LAMP AS A MERCHANDISING PRODUCT

Initially, I wanted to make the lamp with a white cotton, adding a bit of white feather here and there and paint the walls in a very fresh, sky blue colour. Unfortunately, I was directed a slightly different way, as the goal of the exercise was to work with a material without putting a pressure on it. Apparently, the white cotton was too easy and I had to work with something more challenging. The Pantone Colour of the S/S 2015 was Radiant Orchid, so the colour had to be used in my window.

INSPIRATION

There is the short time in the year when winter has not finished yet and spring has not started. The transition time when nature is dying and has yet to be reborn. This lamp window design references the cycle of life, with the idea that a lamp light is an important part of what makes a living space … like in a night garden.

THE MAKING PROCESS

The lamp is made out of textured wallpapers that are shaped into flower petals, swirling on the ground are encouraging new plants to show up and blossom. I was aware that the window at this stage looked a little bit dark for the spring season, the colours of the lamp reflect more on autumn and long dark evenings. It needed something uplifting, therefore I added the white swallow at the top left corner. All the symbols put together helped me to develop the story of a cycle of life in nature, with an idea, that everyday objects surrounding us can transform into something else as well.

DUBLIN WINDOWS SPRING 2017

Hermes silk scarf in Brown Thomas window

ANOTHER EARLY SUNDAY STROLL AND SHORT VISUAL REPORTAGE OF WINDOW DISPLAY IN SOUTH DUBLIN

The town is not very big, so I tend to stay in one area with the most attractive visual merchandising. Wish it was a bigger town I could take longer walks and admire the creative work.

My most favourite one is Dunnes Stores on George Street, the spring is there with the colours and texture, all looking very playful and fresh.

Always enjoy Massimo Dutti windows for the perfect composition. The negative space creates an impression the characters played by mannequins are bit dreamy and distanced, they are in the world of their own.

Brown Thomas windows look quite urban with the squared props and minimalistic use of the walls. The colours are selling the spring season. Even though it is still rather cold outside!

MALE ACCESSORIES

HANDMADE MALE ACCESSORIES

One of my projects during the Visual Merchandising course I was doing in DIT College, Dublin was to create accessories following the micro-trends of the time S/S 2014.

We were given a piece of mannequin each, it was either just a head or an upper body or a head with an upper body. I can not remember today what styles we could choose from except the one I have chosen to follow called One Woman Army. Because I was given un upper body of a male I slightly changed the trend to One Man Army.

All our mannequins were in a pretty bad state covered in an artwork by previous year students. I had to give mine shiny spray treatment.

ONE MAN ARMY

The main materials for making the piece was pasta penne and a feather. Also strings, gold acrylic paint, bits of fabric, elastic band.

Inspiration Military&Tribal Culture

The inspiration for my pasta jewellery piece came from military-style uniform and Maasai tribal accessories. I wanted to mix more of a formal style with something that is considered more of a primitive style, yet very passionate and courageous.

GALERIES LAFAYETTE PAPER CHRISTMAS DISPLAY

Les Galeries Lafayette sustainable arctic window display

Galeries Lafayette store in Paris was opened to the public in 1912. Long tradition, long history, Art Nouveau decorations made the store the second tourist attraction after Eiffel Tower. It is a family business for the last five generations. The business survived through some very troubled times over the last century, from wars to financial crises.

French actress Audrey Tautou opened the Christmas window display in the flagship store Galeries Lafayette on Nov 9th, 2016. The theme was directed by Luc Jacquet is best known for March of the Penguins, Oscar-winning nature documentary in 2006.

Galeries Lafayette paper Christmas display tell a story of a polar bear family. The entire display including bears is made out of paper the most sustainable material on the planet, created by multidisciplinary artist Lorenzo Papace.

Due to climate change and melting icebergs, a family of polar bears has to leave their native homeland in search of a new place. They are forced to migrate. After traveling for miles across the world, leaving behind the North Pole, they finally find a new place covered in ice and snow, a place they are very safe and comfortable in. The snow land is made especially for them by Galeries Lafayette where the family of vulnerable bears finds a shelter. The magical adventure begins! The bears and the public viewers can enjoy the breathtaking paper display through the Christmas season. The bears are playing, dancing, jumping into the ice inside the store and in the arctic windows. Before they head back to the Arctica.
What kind of environmental damage awaits them there?

A child would ask an infantile question:
– Could they not stay longer or maybe even forever?
– Unfortunately, it is not their natural environment. They can only survive in the Arctic if we take care of the climate, if we stop polluting the world if we stop the emission of carbon dioxide if we stop using plastic and other toxic materials.

All generations of humans are responsible for the family of polar bears, as well as any other species, including ourselves. This is the hidden message of the remarkable Christmas display, created in co-operation with Wild-Touch NGO organization which aims to bring more attention to the world on the environment in order to protect our planet.

Unfortunately, our new world leaders are trying to ignore the climate change issue, calling it Chinese hoax. Hopefully, those negative words will only have the very opposite reaction on the public view. More stores and brands should follow the path of Galeries Lafayette in Paris and their involvement in environmental changes where the aim is to raise an awareness on the final consumer.
